As presented to a somewhat pro-choice English class

A miscarriage is a tragic thing- it is the loss of a child. To have a miscarriage must be a terrible feeling. We can all agree on that, right? Do you know what else is the loss of an unborn child’s life? Abortion is the intentional end of life. Five months into this year, there have been over fourteen million abortions worldwide. Abortion is wrong for a myriad of reasons, one being that life begins at conception.
96% of scientists agree with this. The fetus or embryo, depending on how long since conception, is not the woman’s body.
It may be in it, but it is not part of it. Lastly, the effects of abortion on women are terrible. Women have died from complications of their abortions. Abortion is always wrong, which is why we should be pro-life.
An embryo’s heart starts beating sixteen days after it is conceived, long before most women know they are pregnant. When your heart has stopped beating, you are dead. When your heart is beating, surely you are alive. At conception, your sex is decided. You get XX chromosomes if you are female, XY chromosomes if you are male, and there is the rare occasion of getting XX-XY chromosomes and being some of both. The actual female and male parts will develop between six and eighteen weeks. Brain activity starts in the womb, as does movement, like kicking. Kicking can be felt by the mother in the thirteenth week. In Bruce Carlson’s book, he says, “Almost all higher animals start their lives from a single cell, the fertilized zygote.” A zygote is a fertilized egg. He continues, “The time of fertilization represents the starting point in the life history… of the individual.” Carlson, along with the majority of scientists, conclude that life begins at conception.
The Irish word for unborn is “gan breith,” which translates to “alive but not born yet.” Adding to this, a child can be born prematurely at around 20 weeks old and survive. What makes that born developing human different from a 24 week old in the womb?
You will be called a misogynist for saying this- but the child in its mother’s womb is not her body.
Is it her body being aborted? The child has its own set of DNA, different from the mother’s. It also has a different gender half the time. If it was her body, she would have four legs, twenty fingers and toes, and two heads. There are two separate heartbeats. There is a difference between being in a body and being that body. Yes, the developing baby relies on her, but it is not her. Is it her heart being stopped? Depending on what type of abortion, is it her being given a heart attack?
Is it her body being pulled apart? Is it her being suffocated? No, it is not. The one suffering (not that the mother does not suffer at all, but she is not being murdered like the child) is the one who did not ask for this in any way or have actions that lead to it. Speaking of things that lead to abortion, the rape cases are always brought up by the opposing side. Rape makes up less than one percent of abortions. To be precise, it is the cause of .003% of abortions. A child conceived through rape is not any less of a person because of their father’s crime, nor should they die because of it. Two wrongs do not make a right.
Speaking of the mother’s body, the affects of an abortion on it and her mental health are very bad.
Twenty percent of women have immediate complications after their abortion. A post-abortive woman compared to a woman who gave birth to a child is 81% more likely to have mental health issues, 27% more likely to use marijuana, 21% more likely to have suicidal tendencies, and 35% more likely to commit suicide. In 2012, there was a study, done by an abortion activist named Dr. David Grimes, which concluded getting an abortion was safer than giving birth. However, this study is packed with problems. The information he relied on came from the Guttmacher Institute, Planned Parenthood’s “research branch. For a study involving abortion, maybe he should not have relied on information from the nation’s biggest abortion provider. Dr. David Grimes had also been previously affiliated with Planned Parenthood. Another issue is that he estimated. The number of maternal deaths was very precise, because hospitals are required to report those. The number of deaths due to an abortion is unknown. Lastly, studies in Denmark and Finland showed opposite results: maternal death is higher in abortions. Post-abortive women are also two times more likely to become alcoholics, more likely to abuse future children, and six times more likely to use drugs. 19% suffer from all the symptoms of Post Abortive Syndrome, and half suffer from some: anxiety attacks, irritability, outbursts of rage, nightmares, sleep difficulties, flashbacks, alcohol abuse, and intense grief on the baby’s due date or the anniversary of its death. Getting an abortion also increases the risk of breast cancer, ectopic pregnancies- which are when the embryo grows outside of the womb and needs to be removed, as neither it nor the mother could survive-,
future miscarriages, and stillbirths, which are when the child is born dead. An Argentinian abortion activist died from complications in April after receiving one of the first legal abortions there. Abortions harm both the mother and the child.
We should be pro-life because abortion is always wrong. Life begins at conception. Sex is decided right away, along with other traits that determine how you will look, which is relevant bcause so many of the humans’s features are decided even when it is as small as your finger. The child is not the mother’s body. A child has a different heartbeat and DNA from the mother. The affects of an abortion on a woman are very bad. Some of these affects include suicidal behaviors, abusing future children, life-threatening ectopic pregnancies, and alcoholism. Although some people believe being pro-choice is compassionate towards the mother and do not believe it is murdering humans, my points have shown you abortion is harmful. It is the fifth leading cause of maternal death. Now that you are completely aware of how horrible abortion is, will you stand up for life?
